What Is Special About Ashtabula County Ohio?
This beautiful county is a very popular vacation destination, partly because it covers 26 miles of Lake Erie shoreline and also because of the many things there are to do there.
Ashtabula Is Rich In History
The Ashtabula Harbor District has a fabulous historic area with shops, restaurants, and many historic buildings. The Ashtabula Harbor was even considered a major stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. Ships carried slaves to freedom across Lake Erie en route to Canada.
Festivals and Fun Events
There seems to always be something going on in this northeast corner of Ohio including the Wine & Walleye Festival, the Beach Glass Festival, and The Arts on Bridge Street, just to name a few. Learn more at Ashtabula Harbor.
Wineries, Distilleries, and Breweries
We were surprised to learn that there are 24 wineries near the resort that produce world-class wines due to the great growing climate in this part of the state.
In addition to wineries, there are two distilleries and two microbreweries nearby, so there are plenty of places to quench your adult taste buds.
Fishing, Birding and Plenty of Nature
If touring the beverage producers has gotten you interested, but you are looking for a little more to do you might consider bringing the nature lovers with you to this part of the state. The nearby city of Conneaut is the home of America’s number one steel-head trout stream and hundreds of bird species migrate through the area.
Ashtabula’s Famous Historic Covered Bridges
There are 19 covered bridges in Ashtabula county and touring these impressive structures is fun and interesting. Many of these bridges are still in use today and demonstrate some impressive engineering skills that rival some of the woodworkers and craftsmanship of today.
