We were looking for a Kentucky RV Park and we were lucky enough to discover the Kentucky Horse Park and the KHP Campground. The Kentucky Horse Park was established in 1978 and is the world’s only park dedicated to man’s relationship with the horse.
This is a Kentucky State Park and it houses the Smithsonian Affiliate International Museum of the Horse. Since it is a Smithsonian Museum, there are often rotating theme-based historical collections. Check their website at the bottom of this post for current information.
Kentucky RV Park- The Kentucky Horse Park (KHP) Is Famous and Beautiful
This spacious 1,200+ acre equestrian park is world-famous for spectacular horse competitions. KHP is also the resting place of some of the most famous thoroughbred racehorses in history.
In addition to world-renowned horse shows and competitions, we were happy to learn that the KHP has 260 RV sites. This beautiful campground is not only for horse lovers but has spectacular horse shows and special events.
Kentucky RV Park- Kentucky Horse Park RV Sites
The 55’ paved back-in RV sites offer 50/30/20 amp electric and water, fire rings, and picnic tables. There is no sewer at the sites but they do have two convenient dump stations at the park exit.
Our paved site was level and all sites have room for parking two additional vehicles including your RV. As you can see from the pictures and video above, there are lots of open grassy areas around the sites.
KHP Campground Amenities
- Grocery and Gift Shop- KHP has a cute grocery and gift store.
- Tennis/Basketball/Volleyball Courts- they are available but did need a bit of repair during our visit.
- Walking and Biking Legacy Trail- An 8-mile paved walking and biking trail leading from the Kentucky Horse Park Campground to downtown Lexington.

Kentucky RV Park- Can Kentucky Horse Park Campground Handle Big Rigs?
Yes, we have a 44-foot Class A RV and we had no problem fitting into our 55’ site at KHP Campground. There was also plenty of room between sites. The paved roads are also wide enough for big rigs towing vehicles.

Yes, there is WI-FI at the campground but, like most RV parks, it is not strong enough to stream video to watch TV. Plan on streaming through your phone or hot spot device if you don’t have WI-FI antennas in your RV.
RV Water Pressure Regulators Required At KHP Campground!
The water pressure at KHP Campground is very high. You must use a water pressure regulator to avoid damage to your RV water lines. It’s a good idea to always use an RV water pressure regulator where ever you travel in your motorhome since water line damage can be very expensive to repair!

Would We Recommend Kentucky Horse Park Campground?
Yes, we would highly recommend KHP Campground. Unfortunately, during our visit, the tours were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We plan on visiting again once the events and tours are rescheduled. You don’t need to be a horse lover to enjoy this campground!
